How Much Are You Really Spending on Subscriptions?

Most people guess wrong by $100 or more. Here's how to find your real number and what to do about it.

๐Ÿ’ฐ

Research from West Monroe Partners found that consumers underestimate their monthly subscription spending by an average of $133. That's not a small rounding error - that's a bill people forgot they had.

The reason is straightforward: each individual subscription feels small. $9.99 here, $4.99 there. But they compound.

The average person pays more than they think

Add up the typical subscriptions most people have - a couple of streaming services, cloud storage, a music app, a news site, maybe a fitness app - and you're already at $60-80/month before you count the work tools.

For anyone who uses software regularly (designers, developers, marketers), $150-200/month in subscriptions is common. Some people are paying well over $300 without realising it.

How to calculate your real number

The only accurate way to find your total is to pull your bank and card statements for the last 3 months. Look for every recurring charge - don't filter by size. Then:

  • Convert everything to monthly cost (divide annual charges by 12)
  • Add up the total
  • Compare it to what you estimated before you started

The annual pricing trap

Many services offer a discount for paying annually - 'save 20% by paying yearly'. This sounds like a good deal, and sometimes it is. But it also means you pay 12 months upfront and forget about the service for most of the year.

If you're not using something, the annual plan costs you more - not less.

What to do once you know your number

Once you see the real total, the next step is obvious: cut anything you don't actively use. Most people find 3-5 subscriptions they can cancel immediately without noticing any difference in their day.

Then set up a tracker so this number doesn't creep back up over time. Subscription spending tends to grow by default - it only shrinks when you actively manage it.
